Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia, a condition of over-developed or enlarged breasts in men, is common in men of any age. It can be the result of hormonal changes, heredity conditions, disease or the use of certain drugs.

This condition can cause emotional discomfort and impair your self confidence. Some men may even avoid certain physical activities and intimacy simply to hide their condition.
Gynecomastia surgery is a highly individualized procedure and you should do it for yourself, not to fulfill someone else’s desires or to try to fit any sort of ideal image. Adolescents may benefit from surgery although secondary procedures may be needed in future should breast development continue.

Benefits of Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia can improve the appearance of the chest in cases where diet and exercise have failed. The results of the procedure are significant and permanent. Most men who have had surgery for gynecomastia have been very satisfied with the results.

Are you an ideal candidate?
You can be a suitable candidate for gynecomastia if:
· You are physically healthy and of relatively normal weight
· You have realistic expectations
· Your breast development has stabilized
· You are bothered by your abnormally, oversized breasts

Preparing for Gynecomastia
Before you undergo gynecomastia, it is important for you to discuss any medical conditions that you have and to tell your surgeon about any medications that you are taking including any herbal or other non-prescription ones. If your surgeon decides that you can have liposuction, discuss the procedure thoroughly with him or her before deciding if you want to go through with the procedure. Even though your surgeon says that you may does not mean that you must decide to have liposuction. You may still change your mind even after discussing the procedure with your surgeon.

The surgeon will consult with you either by email or on the phone prior to your departure to understand your requests fully, and will also detail the procedure, benefits and risks and answer any questions you have.  He may require additional information from you before booking the procedure - including a photo, and a doctor's medical report. The assessment with the surgeon will give you a detailed understanding of the treatment - the extent of surgery, your health evaluation, your expectations and exactly what parts of the body will be treated. When you are happy with what has been discussed, and have signed a booking form for the operation, the surgery will be booked at a date agreed.

Your surgeon should be able to answer any questions that you have about gynecomastia including questions about what to expect during and after gynecomastia and the complications or problems that sometimes occur with gynecomastia. You may also take information from this website to your appointment to discuss with him.

You will then have another consultation with the surgeon when you arrive in Malaysia, where he will have a physical evaluation of the areas to be treated.  At this appointment you and your surgeon will discuss your goals, and last queries you have and finalize the plan for surgery.

Surgical procedure
The type of procedure used by your surgeon will depend on the degree of breast enlargement. The options include removal of the tissue under the breast, or liposuction of the chest wall. In both instances, a small elliptical incision is made on the lower half of the nipple area (areola). For those men with tissue that is more glandular in nature, all breast tissue directly under the nipple is removed.
If the tissue is fattier in nature, liposuction can provide excellent results. In some people, ultrasonic assisted liposuction is an excellent approach. During liposuction, a small suction rod (cannula) is inserted into the incision to remove fat and other tissue.

In some cases, a repeat procedure is necessary to remove tissue that was missed during the first procedure. In a few cases, if there is a large amount of extra skin, it may be necessary to remove this tissue, which may result in a large scar.

Surgical time will take between 1 ½ - 2 hours.

Recovery and Post op care
Usually, the chest is temporarily swollen and bruised after the surgery. You may also experience numbness or a burning sensation. Depending on the extent of surgery, pain can vary from minimal to moderate, and will last from several days to two weeks.

You will wear compression garments to keep your skin compressed after the procedure. Your surgeon will tell you how long to wear these. Sports and driving may need to be restricted during the recovering period and a compression garment is worn for up to 6 weeks to help with the skin remodeling. We partner with a local supplier to provide these compression garments should you need to purchase them.

If you have severe pain or discharge in the surgical area, or if you experience muscle aches, dizziness or a general ill feeling with fever, nausea or vomiting, you should call your doctor immediately.
Light activities can be resumed within a few days, although your chest will be sore. Most people are able to return to (sedentary) work within three to seven days, and resume more strenuous activities in two to three weeks. You should avoid exposing the operated area to the sun for at least six months to prevent permanently altering the skin pigmentation.

Recovery time and privacy needs vary from person to person. If you are not too concerned if people are aware that you have recently had surgery, you may be able to return to light activities earlier.
