Shauna Now - With bras from her new business
Considering the possibilities I always felt self conscious and embarrassed to wear bikinis. I did not fill out shirts/tops/singlets very well. I felt that I looked like a 12 year old boy!! Did not feel like a woman at all. To compensate for that, I didn’t wear feminine clothing.
Then puberty ended and I realized my breasts weren’t getting any bigger.
I felt embarrassed and self conscious, not the woman that I should have been.
I had considered surgery for many years, and was not encouraged to get it done. Only after meeting my current partner who encouraged me to look into it further, did I start to really consider it as a possibility. So I started looking into it all in about February 2007, after we saw a segment on TV about Gorgeous Getaways.
Price was the factor
I emailed a number of surgeons throughout Australia to obtain quotes and further information. I spent time researching the information presented on their websites. All of the quotes I received were upwards of $11000 and if lucky included one night in hospital – but did not cover anesthetist’s fees, medications and so on.
The main thing that attracted me initially was the massive difference in price. It was at least half as much to get it done in Malaysia than here – and we could get a 10 day holiday for less than it would have cost here! Secondly – once I had researched the doctors and hospitals I could see that they were of a high standard and well regarded.
I had corresponded with a number of other surgery holiday providers, yet I found Gorgeous Getaways to be the friendliest, helpful and professional.
I would send an email and get a response within hours sometimes, very prompt in answering my questions and responding to emails.
They knew the answers to all my questions and put me at ease very early on. Another small aspect that I found extremely helpful was that their website is very user friendly – I found it easy to access all the information I needed.
Making my final decision
I was absolutely nervous!!!! Going to a foreign country to have a surgery I’d never had, in a hospital I’d never seen, with a doctor I’d never met!! But having said that – I had spent months researching and felt as though I had everything covered and was happy in making a decision.
I chose not to tell my family until after we got back to Australia. I did not want them trying to talk me out of it when I had already made the decision for myself and was happy with that.
I did tell a select few friends – only because I was so excited and could not keep my mouth shut!!!
An excellent team
The Gorgeous Getaways staff are fantastic!! I met with Kathy on the day that I arrived, she came to the hotel and went over everything with me.
She gave me a beautiful welcome pack and covered all aspects of the trip. She went over the plan and ensured that I was comfortable in going ahead with the surgery. She even told us all the best places to shop!!
Late the next afternoon I was admitted to hospital. Liz met me at my hotel and took us to the hospital. She stayed with me the whole time, through admission and tests and talking with Dr Nasir. She helped calm my nerves and held my hand through the whole process. We had great fun playing with the different size implants!!
The next morning I met Stephanie – who was going be me my contact for the rest of my trip. She came to the hospital and stayed with me right up to the point that I was taken to theatre. And she was there when I came out of surgery. The following day I was discharged and she came to pick us up and take us back to the hotel.
For the rest of the trip I either saw Stephanie everyday or at least spoke to her on the phone. I had a nurse, Hafsah, come to my hotel room for 3 days following the surgery to change the dressings, help wash me and dress me.
Hafsah is one of the most loving, beautiful women I have ever met. She is lovely!! She’d wash my hair, blow dry and comb it for me, help me get dressed – everything!! She even took us to the Pewter Factory as a treat!!
The surgery journey
I had Dr Nasir as my surgeon – he is amazing. So friendly, approachable and a very caring man.
I was admitted to hospital on the night before my surgery and he came to visit me in my room, along with the anesthetist. Dr Nasir stayed with me for about 40 mins. He went over everything and answered all my questions.
He was not in a rush to leave and stayed until he was sure I was comfortable with everything. He listened to all I had to say and genuinely appeared to have my best interests at heart. No question was too silly and I did not feel uncomfortable or confused at any time.
We confirmed sizing and made sure I was comfortable with everything. My boyfriend and Stephanie were allowed to come with me to the last point before theatre – so that helped calm my nerves as well. Soon after that I was given an injection and off to sleep I went.
I did not do anything specific to prepare for surgery. I did stop taking aspirin and some vitamins that I was taking, at about 4 weeks prior to the surgery. I tried to eat well and drink lots of water and fruit juice both before and after surgery. I do not smoke so that was not an issue.
I had to fast from midnight. Throughout the night the nurses came in and checked my temperature and blood pressure and so on. They gave me something to help the circulation of my blood. And later they gave me a sleeping tablet to help me sleep that night.
The next morning I woke up and it was all go from then on. Met with Dr Nasir and the anesthesia again, the nurses did some last minute blood pressure and temperature tests and then I was in.
After the surgery I woke up quite groggy, and was in and out for minutes at a time throughout the day. Aside from the pain, I was ok. Felt safe and comfortable and knew that I was being looked after well.
I woke up throughout the day on and off for about 24 hours. At times I was in quite a bit of pain, but they give you morphine to help. I did have it on a constant drip to me but I got quite nauseas so they changed it so I could self medicate with a button to press when I wanted it.
I was concerned that I would give myself too much, but I was not aware that it was set up so that I could not have too much. So silly me put up with quite a bit of pain – they told me later that I had only pushed the button 6 times in 24 hours – you can push it as much as you want!!!
The nurses are so beautiful, so many of them too. I would push the call button and 3 of them would come straight away – as it they were waiting outside the door!! They even offered to make up a bed for my boyfriend to stay with me, their visiting hours are very flexible.
When my boyfriend went back to the hotel for the night I had a little cry, a nurse came in and saw me crying and sat with me for ages, stroking my face and holding my hand. Way beyond the care I would get here in Australia. They came in often to check on me throughout the day and night.
The hospital and staff are outstanding! Perfect – nothing went wrong and I was well looked after. Dr Nasir, the anesthetist and the nurses checked on me many times and I felt that I was in great hands. As I said, the hospital may look very old – but the quality of care is amazing. I honestly believe I got better care there than I would have at home.
I was discharged the following day at lunch time and felt good to be going back to the hotel. I had little movement in my arms and seemed to lack a bit of strength. Coughing and sneezing were an effort!! You don’t realize how much you use your chest muscles – until you can’t!! But everyday I improved, felt better and better each day.
Dr Nasir prescribed me pain medication which I used – I had a bit of muscle soreness and sharp twinges (which they tell me is the nerve endings repairing themselves.) I also used Nurofen Plus which I had bought from home.
Recovery and holiday
It probably took about 2 - 3 days to be able to spend a lot of time away from the hotel. Everyday though I felt better and better. Having said that, everyday I was sore for a while, and still 4 weeks later they are a little sore every so often.
Our hotel was very central to everything – so we could go out for a few hours and then if I got sore it was not a hassle to go back to the hotel, have a rest for a while and then go back out again.
Shopped till I dropped
SHOPPING!!!! The number 1 thing we did was shopping! Everything is amazingly cheap!! Chinatown is fantastic for bartering bargains! We also went to BB Plaza – a huge shopping centre.
Our hotel was right next to the Petronas Towers – so we went there quite a bit for meals and shopping. We also went to Aquaria - which is a brilliant aquarium - beautiful. And our lovely nurse, Hasfah, took us to the Pewter factory – very interesting to see. I did not have any other treatments done, did not want to do too much.
I did not want to leave. I loved Malaysia and wanted to stay, we had settled in to life there very well, I was not ready to come back to reality!! Despite this, I was a little nervous about coming home and people noticing or not noticing a difference in me.
Super pleased with my new assets
I am very pleased with the results! They are exactly what I wanted – not too big and not too small – just right. I look like a woman!! My clothes look so much better and I can wear singlets and tops and feel like a woman. I’ve tried my bikini on and was shocked! I love the way I look.
The people that I told that I was getting them done think they look great – they all say that they are a great size for me. More and more each day they are looking more natural and settling in.
Definitely feel more feminine.
For years I dressed in jeans, singlets and shorts. Now I feel confident in wearing more feminine clothes, I fill out the singlets so much more. I look like a woman – not a little girl. I feel GREAT!!
I definitely feel better about myself, not so self conscious, I feel pretty! Womanly!
I think it has changed my life, I have more confidence and feel so much better about myself. It hasn’t affected my career, but my relationship with my partner is great. Our relationship has always been brilliant but now I love it when I catch him checking out my boobs!!
Tips from my holiday
I learnt so much!! So many things… Try to take someone with you – it was great to have the support from my boyfriend, and he helped with some many little things, helping me out of bed, carrying the bags, drying me off after a shower, helping dress me.
Everyone says take loose fitting clothes and button up shirts – I didn’t put too much stock in this – but wish I had!! I took singlets and didn’t put them on at all. I lived in my boyfriend’s shirts and t-shirts. You need something that is easy to put on and take off, and something that is loose so it doesn’t rub against your breasts.
Try and book a hotel that is central to everything, we were very close to everything so we could go out for a little while and then it was no big deal if I got sore and wanted to go back to the hotel for a rest and then go out again later.
All the best things
GO FOR IT!! You won’t regret it! It’s the best thing I could have done – so happy!! Gorgeous Getaways, the Doctors, and Hospitals – everything is fantastic – you won’t get better care.
Service from Gorgeous Getaways and the hospital was amazing – as I mentioned above they were all fantastic, caring people. I really don’t think I would get better care anywhere else. I have been in hospital in Australia twice and no way does the care compare – Malaysia was the best.
We stayed at Traders Hotel – which was beautiful, when we go back to Malaysia we will chose to stay there again. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. The suite was amazing – great view of the Towers right outside our windows. They kept the room immaculate and even left us a handwritten note from the room attendant saying it was a pleasure to look after our room!!
The best thing about choosing Gorgeous Getaways is that they have done all the homework for you, they have found the best of the best and stick to it. They are linked to the best Doctors and Hospitals in Malaysia.
The support that they provide before, during and after surgery is great – so helpful, friendly and always in constant contact with you – so you never feel like you are on your own. It really settles your nerves to have them with you through the whole process. The nurse that they provide to your hotel is fantastic – far beyond the call of duty – but very necessary too!
I was well looked after from the first email I sent, to being taken back to the airport at the end of my trip. No hesitation in using them again or recommending them to my friends and family. Nothing went wrong – no issues at all – I cannot think of a single bad point – and I’m being completely honest!!
