Crossing the 'fine line'

Repeated efforts to shed the extra fat never altered my shape. Those thighs remained disproportionate and awkward. For the last 5 or so years, I had contemplated taking the 'drastic step' of plastic surgery.  Ignorance, the social stigma and exclusively negative media exposure to the 'realities' of liposuction held me back.

What changed my mind?  Well last year, a close friend became a client of Gorgeous Getaways and shared her personal journey with me - from decision time, to the procedure event and recovery.  I observed a wonderful and empowering change in her self-image take shape over time.  And at some point, this weight on one's emotional self becomes too great to bear.  A fine line is crossed and the need outweighed the fears.

Now, a year later, after attending a Gorgeous Getaways information session, a perfectly-timed opportunity arose and I committed myself. Gorgeous Getaways provide an excellent service at a notably better price than I would have paid in Australia.  My holiday was conveniently attached to the end of a visit to Europe.

My surgeon, Dr Heng impressed me from the start.  A man of excellent standards, I found him patient, welcoming and incredibly supportive through the entire process.  I was incredibly nervous during the pre-op consult but soon knew that I could place complete trust in this man and his team.

Dr Heng made himself available before and after the procedure - with all the time I needed to gain confidence in him and have my questions/fears/concerns addressed and eased.  Dr Heng reassured and validated me in this undertaking. I still provide him with occasional updates via email, which he appreciates in turn.  And his work is top-class!

I found the Gorgeous Getaways staff wonderful.  They work very hard and very long hours and always offer their great warmth, kindness and care.  I am incredibly grateful to each and every one of them.

If you are considering plastic surgery, know these things:

1) This choice must be for you and you only.

2) Educate yourself... thoroughly.  Know exactly what you're in for, ask tons of questions and speak to as many people as you can.  By being fully informed, you go ahead with confidence, and a realistic view of the outcomes.

3) Be sure that you are prepared in yourself to continue supporting & honoring the results long after your procedure.

4) Once you have made the decision, believe in it.  A 100% positive attitude will gain the best results.

Taking it slow
Due to the irregular nature and extent of my procedure (5 hours with 12 litres removed), recovery was a little slower.  For the first 36 hours, I slept a great deal, vomited 3 times and passed through a bout of fever.

On the second I got out of bed for the first time - how difficult and painful that was! However I was very surprised to note how rapidly I started to feel better. On the second evening I was discharged from the hospital. My good friend was there with me for the first week and it was such a blessing to have her support.  I really appreciated her help with all the little things that we always take for granted but after such a procedure suddenly seem huge and exhausting.

I experienced some swelling in the legs from walking a little too much in the beginning, but 3 days with my legs elevated sorted that out. After one week, I was able to shower, dress and cook for myself unaided. By the end of my two week stay, I was very keen to get home and get back into my life. I felt proud to have done this brave thing and looked forward to telling my family about it.

Relishing the 'new' me

I am delighted with my new shape.  At 5 weeks post-op, I have gone from a size 16-18 down to a comfortable size 12.  There remains a lot of waste tissue and fluids to be processed out of my body and my skin will take quite some time to 'catch up'.  Some stretch marks have increased and I may develop some looser skin on the inner thigh, but this I understand and accept.

I am doing all right things to support my system, my skin and body to accept and maximize the results... and they are all worth it for me! Most importantly - that heavy little weight that's been with me for so long has morphed and changed.., for the first time I feel I can actually appreciate all of me.  Wonderful stuff!
